Verbascum nigrum Dark
Mullein
Scrophulariaceae
Dark Mullein
another of the Verbascum family sharing almost identical
chemical properties to each other. This one is native to the
British Isles whereas the V.thalapsus is a European native.
It is
considerably different in form, flower and leaf shape to
it's cousins, growing much smaller, as a perennial than the
others do as biennial.
Many gardeners
prefer the smaller plant (rarely growing to 1m tall) and
still others prefer the 'non furry' leaves.
Medicinally it
can be treated as the others but probably dries better as
there is no dry leaf-fur to deal with.
They can live
for years, flowering almost continuously from early Spring
until late Autumn but we have noticed that for seemingly no
reason one will just fall over and die while it's companions
carry on as before.
