Asteraceae
Red
Velvet Sunflower
Malvacea
We have always grown sunflowers, for many reasons, including
food for us, food for the Cocatoo's and as a lure to keep
the King Parotts away from the tomato patch.
These
however are a whole new experience. The deep Australian Red
Gold colour is wonderful as is their habit of shooting many
flowering branches from the typical sturdy sunflower stem.
They are easy to strike, preferring to be planted where they
are to grow in Spring or Summer. Take care to allow the
plant enough room though as the get to 2.5 metres high and
1.5 metres across.
