Symphytum officinale
Comfrey

Boraginacea

Having a deep tap root makes Comfrey a little difficult to get established in some soils but once settled it seems to last for years.
Comfrey seeds strike readily enough in the nursery but we do not plant out until the plant is quite sturdy and has a healthy root system.
Because it contains phosphorus, potassium, calcium and allantoin it is extremely useful as a healing agent speeding up the cell renewal in damaged muscle.

A tea made from the old Comfrey leaves as you clean up around them, is fantastic as a compost accelerator.

As collection and sorting of the seed is not easily managed, and therefore quite expensive, we sell root divisions instead.

Comfrey root cuttings, travel well by post and the resulting plant is much much faster than growing from seed.

A poultice of the leaves is also useful in the healing of cuts and bruises and root tincture added to an ointment base has worked well for us in the treatment of arthritic joints.
