Stevia rebaudiana Stevia
Commonly acknowledged as natures sweet secret,
these unremarkable looking plants are wonderful to occupy
sheltered corners of the garden that happen from time to
time. They grow to around 50 cm in height and, depending on
the climate can be perennial or annual.
They are spring/summer
plants but if your climate is warm for most of the year, and
they are protected from the harsh elements, they will
continue to grow throughout the year. The seed is small and
wispy but germination rate is high.

There are many extreme claims about
the sweetness of Stevia but the actual comparable sweetness
of the raw leaf, gram to gram with sugar is around 10:1,
which makes it's use in cooking and drinks an extremely good
substitute for sugar. Extraction of the crystaline
Steviosides is frankly beyond the interested gardeners
ability but the leaves and stems are enjoyable just as they
are. |
