All tomato seed has been organically grown, here at Beautanicals, from our own seed. Heirloom varieties are marked as such.

Angelina's - Heirloom

Indeterminate vines.

Can get quite a sprawl if not supported. Taken from Italy to America by Angelin Genovese in 1931.

A medium sized longish paste tomato that is longer than wide.

Very nice robust appearance and sweet taste.

The colour deepens with cooking to a rich, almost burgundy tone that is mouth watering.

Apollo - New Variety

60-65 days – Indeterminate vines.

A pretty, round and tasty variety, Apollo is quite eary to fruit and does do extremely well in cooler areas.

The bushes are tall so staking and trimming off unnecessary side shots are essential for good fruiting.

The fruit grows in trusses and can be trained to gradually fruit instead of

'all at once'.

Red Ponderosa - Heirloom

85 days – Indeterminate vines. Considered the original heirloom "Beefsteak" tomato.

An old-time favorite that has been popular for many years due to it's excellent productivity and wonderful taste. Vigorous vines produce 250 - 500gm fruit, slightly ribbed, bright-red tomatoes that have spectacularly delicious, sweet flavours.

This tomato's excellent taste and meaty flesh make it an ideal tomato for eating fresh or cooking.

It slices well for sandwiches, and great for preserving or drying as they are not too 'seedy'!

Berry Nice Tomato - New

60 - 85- days – Indeterminate vines. This is a great variety to grow. in that it begins to fruit early and continues for ages

.Very disease and pest resistant, it can get to 2 m high and 1.5 m spread, with braces of fruit at every opportunity.

The fruit is larger than a cherry tomato with an ox heart shape and a lovely mild taste that is good fresh, but preserves well also.

It will do well in a container as long as it is well fed and watered.

Black Russian - Heirloom

70 - 80 days - Determinate vines

This heavy fruited, heirloom variety dates back to the early 1900's! and is my personal favourite.

The skin and flesh are a beautiful, dense red to green. The black colours up with maturity and sunlight.

Best planted either very late winter or late summer.

It has a good acid taste as a salad tomato and is best served sliced to appreciate the tone.

They do well in cool areas and we have them growing right through winter until the frosts hit.

Ox Heart - Heirloom

85-90 days – indeterminate vines.

Probably the best known of the Bullock heart class of heirloom tomatoes, this heavy producer of very consistent tomatoes has been a part of the Australian backyard since the end of WWI.

We have found it best grown on steel mesh instead of stakes to keep the very heavy fruit off the ground.

Fantastic flavour fresh, they are best left to ripen fully so that the intense tomato aroma accompanies the taste.

Orange Delight Cocktail

55-60- days – Indeterminate vines.

Growing on a vigorous vine, that can keep climbing for several metres are bunches of bright orange cocktail tomatoes that are larger than a cherry tomato

Thin-skinned, this plump tight tomato is juicy, sweet, rich in flavour with practically no tang at all.

Easier to pick than a regular Cherry Tomato, they are still bite sized and convenient on the plate or in the salad.

Quick to fruit, they are often the first of the season, even if planted late.

This is a West Virginian heirloom, named after it's creator, Darrell Kellogg of Redford, Michigan, and is a very distinctive orange beefsteak tomato that grows very well here in Australia.

As a salad tomato it has an outstanding taste and is very productive.

Kellogg's Breakfast bears fruit that can weigh as much as 400 gm or more.

This 'designer' tomato is supposedly an old Russian heirloom, with fruits that are a deep red, almost black colour with green shoulders.

Mortgage Lifter - Heirloom

90 days - Indeterminate vines.
This old, heirloom tomato grows huge (almost a kilo), pink fruit, that are very meaty and has few seeds.

Tomato tradition states that a farmer sold these tomatoes and seedlings to pay off the mortgage on his farm in only six years!

We have found that it is better to plant this one a bit early in the Winter as it does not cope with our very hot summers well and all of the best fruit is produced in Spring.

A great Tomato for sandwiches, especially when fully ripe.

Big Rainbow - Heirloom

85- days – Indeterminate vines.

The large 400 - 500 gm, deep orange fruits on this variety are covered with beautiful red streaks and spots.

The flesh is firm, low acid  has a delicious flavour, and the spreading  and reasonably attractive (for a Tomato) bush is quite leafy and lush.

The fruit , inside the tomato, is as coloured as the exterior, making an interesting addition to salads.

Red Brandywine - Heirloom

80 days – Indeterminate vines.

First introduced to the United States in 1885 by Amish farmers in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the large vines produce fruit that are 250 - 500 gms in size and deep red and deep green in colour.

This, quite acid and excellent tasting tomato is very productive and reasonably disease resistant. Sometimes slow to get going, it usually keeps producing well into the season.  A bit of a 'connoisseur' tomato as far a taste and look goes.

Red Grape - Heirloom

Great in salads, preserves, pickling, or just eating fresh from the garden!

They tend to be early into the season and continue fruiting until the the very end.

San Marzano - Heirloom

80 days – Determinate vine.

An excellent tasting Italian paste variety with generous yields.

The deep red, pear shaped fruits (80mm) are solid and meaty and grow in clusters.

Low growing and sturdy, this is a very practical tomato if you don't have much space.

It grows well in large pots and, as long as it is well fed, it is not prone to major insect attacks.

It makes a fantastic paste that maintains it's colour well.

Sweeet Bite Cherry Tomato

55-60- days –

Indeterminate vines.

These are very quick growers with a season range that is second to none.
Bright red tomatoes that vary in size to almost ping pong ball proportions.

Almost any time of year will do and if you plant them in a pot with some winter protection, you can use them all year round.

Thin skinned, sweet and prolific, they produce vines that can grow to three metres with generous bunches being  borne before you have picked the last lot.

Roma Tomato - Heirloom

75- days – Determinate vines.

Having a determinate nature makes this variety easy to grow in pots or a constrained situation.

The fruit is perfect for sauces and cooking as it is thick walled with few seeds and an easy to peel skin. Low acid as well which suits many people.

They are quite disease resistant and easy to grow, even if you don't have much time to spend with them.

We find them convenient to stake and tie and then you walk away.

Yellow Pear Tomato

70 - 76 days - Indeterminate vines

This small fruited, heirloom variety dates back to the late 1800's!

The skin and flesh are a beautiful, rich yellow, and resemble a large grape! The fruit are 30mm long and grow in bunches.

Great in salads, preserves, pickling, or just eating fresh from the garden!

They tend to last long into the season and are often happily fruiting long after the others have  returned to the compost bin.

We have had the best results on a trellis rather than staked as they do like to wander.

Health Kick - Recent

70 days - determinate vines.
We have been trying this new variety over a few seasons and so far it has proven to be quite successful.

it is supposedly higher in lycopene than any other variety but we have not noticed a significant difference.

The bushes are very hardy though and it crops very well with ovoid fruit that cuts well and tastes lovely.

They survive well over winter and will even come back nicely after a frosting.

Rouge de Marmande- Heirloom

60 - 70 days - indeterminate vines.

This is a nice, quick, old fashioned tomato that will bear early in the season because it is not too bothered by late Spring chill.

It's a good one to start the season with and bears a general 'all round' tomato that will even cut nicely for sandwiches.

It is a bit of a spreader so make sure you allow it some room.

Plant seed indoors in late winter and get them out straight after the danger of frost is over, even in Victioria and Tasmania it does well in late spring and early summer.

Rouge de Marmande was a very popular 'Greengrocer Tomato' during the 1980's, but has disappeared from the shelves, this century.
